LES BAUX DE PROVENCE

LES BAUX DE PROVENCE

Today, Les Baux is primarily a tourist attraction, before being a place to live. It is one of the most beautiful villages in France, welcoming over one and a half million visitors a year. There are still 22 inhabitants living within the walls of Les Baux, in the upper part of the village, and 381 inhabitants in the entire commune. The village of Les Baux de Provence is located in the heart of the Alpilles on a rocky plateau at 245m. It overlooks exceptional landscapes over Arles, the Camargue and the Alpilles, offering breathtaking panoramic views. This huge, superb stone fortress is undoubtedly one of Provence's must-sees!

SAINT RÉMY DE PROVENCE

The village of Saint Rémy is less than 10 km from the hotel.

A Roman town, a Renaissance town, a town of painters and writers, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a charming town par excellence. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is one of the oldest towns in France, with remains dating back to the first millennium BC. But it was under Roman imperial rule that the town really took off.

The town has preserved many remains from this period, most notably the site of Glanum. This ancient site is one of the most important in France, where you can still see or guess at a monumental centre with its forum, basilica and curia.

Arles

ARLES

The town of Arles is less than 20 km from the hotel Le Fabian des Baux.

A Celtic settlement that was colonised by the Greeks, Arles became Roman thanks to Caesar, who established the veterans of his legions here in 46 BC. This was the first golden age of the "little Rome of the Gauls", which was to become a major religious centre in the early days of Christianity. Ruined and battered by the invasions of the early Middle Ages, the town was reborn in the 12th century, and the splendour of its medieval monuments bears witness to the vitality and wealth of this period.

The 17th and 18th centuries saw the construction of countless private mansions, which today still add to the charm of the old town centre, where a number of listed monuments can be found, the legacy of 2,000 years of history. Since 1981, all the Roman and Romanesque monuments have been listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites, and Arles is now a Town of Art and History.

AVIGNON

The magnificent city of Avignon is just 30 kilometres from the hotel.

Known as the "City of the Popes" or "Altera Roma", Avignon still bears the unalterable imprint of the Popes' stay in the city that was for a time the capital of the medieval West. Today, it is a radiant cultural capital with its world-renowned Theatre Festival.

Visit Avignon: the Palais des Papes and the Pont St Bénézet, UNESCO World Heritage sites, the Petit Palais Museum, the Musée Angladon, the Palais du Roure and the Maison Jean Vilar are all close by - Opposite Avignon, on the other bank of the Rhône, you'll find a host of monuments including the Chartreuse, the Tour Philippe le Bel, the Fort and the Abbaye Saint-André.

THE ALPILLES

THE ALPILLES

Since 13 July 2006, the Alpilles region has been protected by the creation of the Alpilles Regional Nature Park.

There are very few inhabitants within this garrigue massif. However, some villages are famous for their Roman ruins and summer festivals. The Massif des Alpilles is home to a number of villages: Saint-Rémy-de-Provence on the northern slopes, Les Baux-de-Provence to the south, a museum and Romanesque chapel at Eygalières to the north-east, and the Alphonse Daudet Museum at Fontvieille in the reconstruction of the famous mill on a prominence linked to the massif on the road to Arles.

Various other museums, including a santon museum. Not forgetting Maussane, Mouriès and Aureille. All these villages have retained their authenticity, where you can take your time to live and stroll around.

THE CAMARGUE

Hotel Le Fabian des Baux is close to the Camargue National Reserve and just an hour from Les Saintes Maries de la Mer.

The Camargue is a site of major national importance for local birds, for migratory birds and particularly for wintering birds, since in 2000-2005 it was the leading French site in terms of the number of wintering birds welcomed each year (122,000 birds, ahead of the Bay of Arcachon, which welcomed 105,000).

The Camargue is also famous for being home to the pink flamingo. The botanical and zoological reserve was created in 1928. The manadiers are committed to promoting the Camargue horse breed and the AOC bull. Rice-growing is an integral part of Camargue agriculture.

The best-known sites include Le Grau du Roi, Aigues-Mortes and of course Les Saintes Maries de la Mer, not forgetting the magnificent sandy beaches.

THE PONT DU GARD

Some forty kilometres from your hotel, you'll find one of the masterpieces of Roman architecture, the Pont du Gard. Admirably integrated into a natural site that has retained its wild charm, the Pont du Gard fascinates every visitor with its elegance and majesty.

Two thousand years after its construction, this ancient edifice is still a true masterpiece, as much for its technical prowess as for its sheer beauty. It spans the Gardon river, continuing the Roman aqueduct that carried water from Uzès to Nîmes.

This monument has been a World Heritage Site since 1985. It attracts 1.5 million visitors a year, making it the 2nd most visited provincial monument after Mont-Saint-Michel.

THE LUBERON

Le Fabian des Baux is just 1 hour's drive from the village of Gordes in the Lubéron. Gordes is a magnificent hilltop village built into the rock.
