Carrières de Lumières 2024 programme in Les Baux de Provence

THE EGYPT OF THE PHARAOHS FROM KHEOPS TO RAMSES II

Production: Culturespaces Studio ® / Artistic director: Virginie Martin / Design and production: Cutback / Music supervision and mixing: Start Rec

From 19 April 2024, immerse yourself in the world of the Egypt of the Pharaohs, a legendary civilisation that spans three millennia and captivates people of all ages.

The wind stirring up grains of sand reveals the remains of ancient Egypt, as discovered by French scientists during the Egyptian Campaign of 1798 to 1801, and immortalised by the painter David Roberts. He wrote: "We are a people of dwarfs visiting a nation of giants". Ancient Egypt, rich in cosmogonic tales, reveals the divine struggles on the walls of the Carrières des Lumières, leading to the emergence of humanity.

Your journey continues along the Nile, a vital and sacred source, whose seasonal floods provide fertile silt for an abundance of flora and fauna. Daily life in ancient Egypt is illustrated by magnificent bas-reliefs, paintings and papyrus.

The pyramids, marvels of ancient architecture, are being built before your very eyes: huge blocks are being assembled to form the tombs of the eternal kings, under the watchful eye of the majestic Sphinx. The grandeur of ancient Egypt is closely linked to the pharaohs who ruled over the unified kingdoms of Upper and Lower Egypt. Monumental statues of famous kings and queens dominate the space, such as Khafren, Hatshepsut, Thutmose III, Akhenaten and Nefertiti. Great battles, such as that of Qadech led by Ramses II, marked these reigns.

The arms of the Nile seem to pour liquid gold down the walls, symbolising the divine flesh that forged the sumptuous jewels of the Egyptian monarchs.

Ancient Egypt also boasts hundreds of temples dedicated to its many deities. From Luxor to Abu Simbel, these majestic complexes are centres of cultural, spiritual, economic and political life, celebrated in grand processions. The Valley of the Kings, home to the famous tomb of Tutankhamun, and the Valley of the Queens, where Nefertari's tomb is located, are revealed in vivid colours.

The cycle of life concludes by transporting you to the beyond, beneath the astronomical ceiling of Denderah, traditionally 15 metres high, but here extended within your reach. The journey comes to an end, having revealed only a fraction of the bewitching world of ancient Egypt, whose mysteries remain to be explored.
